Need Help With a Ram's Horn Pattern
hollyannvix wrote in weloveamigurumi
Hey guys! I need help.

I've been trying to come up with my own pattern for a ram's horn, and I was really successful at making one (which would be the left horn). The part I need help with, is that I'm trying to reverse it for the other side, so they can look symmetrical once I sew them on, and I'm having problems with making the curve going the right way.

So, that's what the horn looks like. Here's my pattern that I figured out, so you can try this as well (I hope this makes sense!):

Ch 2, 4 sc in 2nd ch from hook.

1. 1 sc in each st. (4)

2. 2 sl st in first st, 1 sl st in next st; 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st (6)

3-4. 1 sl st in first three st; 1 sc in last three st. (6)

5. *2sl st in next st, 1 sl st in the next st. Repeat from * once more, then 2 sc in next st. and 1 sc in last st. (9)

6-7. sl st in first 5 st, sc in last 4 st. (9)

8. * 2 sl st. in first st, 1 sl st in next 2 st. Repeat from * 2 more times. Then 2 sc in next st, and 1 sc in last two st.

9. sl st in next 8 st, sc in last 4 st.

10. sc in each st. Fasten off.

I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out how to reverse the spiral so it goes in the other direction so it'll look right on the plushie. I've tried reversing the pattern, but that didn't work. I've tried putting the slip stitches in the middle of the rounds instead of on the ends, and that didn't work...I'm just kinda lost right now >.>

Can anyone help? Thanks!

Oh my god, poor you! :-D
I had the same problem, but with ears. Couldn't think of anything rather than making the other one with my left hand... It was very hard, since I'm not left-handed, but I managed somehow. At least the ear was small...
Maybe you should try asking around and find some left-handed person to make another horn for you? Even if she (or he) can't crochet, the horn doesn't look too complicated to make, and you can explain how it's done.

Actually, if that's a complete horn you have in the photo, I think you can make it yourself with your left hand :-D Not going to be easy, but it is doable.

Yeah, that's the complete horn in the photo. I haven't tried doing it left-handed yet but...I'm kinda dreading it XD At the sametime, I can't really ask someone to do it for me, since I'm planning on making a bunch of them and such for future stuff. Whew! Well, I guess this is going to be challenging >.>

I havent tried it, but can you just reverse your directions? Like, rows 3-4: 1sc in first 3 st, sl st in next 3.

Then 5: 1 sc in 1st st, 2sc in next, [1 sl st in next, 2 sl st in next 2] repeat.

R6-7: sc in first 4 st, sl st in remaining sts

Yeah, I tried reversing the pattern, but the horn still turned out having the spiral going in the same way.

I just tried it from the bottom up and reversed, which sort of looks right, but not quite.

Lefty is the only way

if you're after more than the shape, but also the lines of the rows of stitches making spirals in the opposite direction, there's no other way than to do it lefty. FWIW, I am a right-handed person who crochets left (I'm a bit out-of-practice for right) and what I found was that I hold the hook in my right hand as a pencil, and in the left hand as a knife. Do you knit? If you knit with the yarn in your right hand, that's exactly how you need to hold that yarn to knit left-handed.

it should be ok if you repeat as first horn, turn and flip it.
